Unitary Devon ?  It's vital that you make your views known

Unitary Devon

Tuesday 24 March

THE Boundary Committee has announced further proposals to restructure local government in Devon and wants to know what you think about them.

The Committee is suggesting:

·                     a single unitary for the whole of the current Devon County Council area excluding Plymouth and Torbay ,

OR

·                     a Greater Exeter & Exmouth unitary authority, and a further unitary authority covering the remainder of Devon, with no changes to Plymouth and Torbay .

What do you think about these proposals?

Do you want this to happen?

If you would prefer no enforced central government change i.e. the status quo, please contact the Boundary Committee and tell them not only what you think about the proposals, but why you think it.

You can also contact the Department for Communities and Local Government to give your views.

Devon councils have, over the last few years, been working together to share the services they provide and reduce costs for residents. If either of the Boundary Committee’s latest options is approved, it could lead to the biggest upheaval in local government for a generation and would cost millions of pounds to bring in at a time when the country is facing one of the deepest recessions for years.

It’s crucial that you put forward your views and make your voice heard, whether or not you took part in the Boundary Committee’s 12-week consultation on reorganising Devon last summer.

It’s vital you reaffirm your opinions again, telling the Boundary Committee not only what you think about the options, but why.

During the last consultation, almost 6,000 people and organisations responded. More than two-thirds - 68% - were against a unitary Devon . Only 13% supported a Greater Exeter and Exmouth unitary authority.

Don’t let those views be lost in the mists of time. Please contact the Boundary Committee again and make your views know again.

This latest consultation, which closes on Thursday 14 May, will be the most important yet and the one that the Boundary Committee will be taking most seriously before they make their final recommendations to the Government by 15 July.
